In 1995 a movie was released that you didn’t see. It was called Jupiter’s Wife, and was directed by documentary filmmaker and producer Michel Negroponte.
The film chronicles two years in the life of Maggie Cogan, and runs the gamut of topics, from women’s rights, to ESP, to heartbreak, to mental illness, to television game shows, to homelessness. Oh-- and there are ponies as well! It offers in character development and social introspection what any typical Hollywood movie could only dream of.
Negroponte patiently filters through and deciphers the esoteric and elaborate ornaments Maggie has created to keep herself from the stark reality of her tragic existence. We learn her story not with excuses, but simply with explanations.
We meet her friends who knew her when she had the world by its horns, and hear from her long-forgotten parents. We see and understand what has brought her to homelessness, and watch her slowly put her life back together. The film is filled with both tragedy and hope. In essence, it is life.
The next time you feel like escaping your life by watching some shit blow up or some such nonsense, why not watch this film and find escape by embracing yourself in humanity and all the wonder that it entails instead?
