This DVD set-- this Tabla Beat Science-- is quite refreshing. The package includes two discs, with one concert on each. The featured musicians are Zakir Hussain, Bill Laswell, Ustad Sultan Khan, Karsh Kale, Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw, Midival Punditz, DJ Disk, and Fabian Asultany; not one of which is without talent.
The shows begin with the wholesome sounds of a lone sitar, joined shortly thereafter by entrancing percussion. This melody is pure and honest; an earthy sound that summons thoughts of an Indian marketplace. The nimbleness of the sitar player's fingers leave the viewer in awe, as does the agility of the percussionist's hands. Both deliver a performance so intricate and spellbinding that they appear to be bewitched by some musical spirit.
Before you know it, a pair of earthy vocals take center stage. All the while, images of far-off regions skip about the screen, setting the stage for the music. Suddenly, the listener is enveloped by not only traditional instruments, but by more modern ones-- such as electric guitar and a DJ-- which help boost the melody along.
All in all, we experience music in its full life cycle-- from humble beginnings with age-old instruments to futuristic sounds. Tabla Beat Science helps us experience the past and future in one enlightening concoction. Complete with a plethora of bonus material, the compositions contained within this trifold are sweet recollections of how music began, and a hint to where it may go. Acquire these DVDs and allow innate melodies to coax your soul into tranquility. Cheers!
