Oh, this is nostalgia, alright. Asheru and Blue Black just put me back in the halls of junior high, swapping tapes full of Tribe and Brand Nubian with my friends; listening, laughing, and having a good time. That’s when good music was good music. There was no such thing as a “backpacker” yet. People didn’t look down on you and call you "sellout" if you got radio play. Hip-hop was just plain good music.
Seven years after that sweet little memory, Asheru and Blue Black began their careers, recording two EPs and a 12"-- most of it cut only on vinyl-- as The Unspoken Heard. Swapping mic control, Asheru and Blue Black made timeless track after timeless track, spitting a mix of the political and playful, giving you something to fill your head with, and nod it to.
48 Months collects those first four vinyl-only years on disc, serving as both a re-introduction to some of the best music made since those junior high days, and an appetizer for the Soon Come CD, and the forthcoming Asheru album. (You have to read up on this man: father, teacher, NOMMO founder, activist, and MC!) And for those of you lucky enough to have followed the Seven Heads family from the start, there are two brand-new tracks to appease you: the killer “How Ya Livin'?” with Grap-Luva and J-Live, and “Black Moses”.
There isn’t a bad track on the disc-- not even the House-addled Soul Dub Version of “Smiley (The Woh, Woh Song)” at the end. It’s all over too soon, and can’t start again fast enough.
