This DVD is gonna make you kinda sad, folks. Maybe not right away. But when you realize what you’ve watched, it will hit you. The Legend Live is the last recorded performance before Marley’s death two years later. It was filmed in 1979, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, and was part of a massive tour of political and spiritual significance for Marley. Though it may have been taking its toll mentally and physically on the singer, it in no way hindered his ability to perform. Marley’s presence fills the stage, especially when he and the Wailers launch into “Exodus”, “Zimbabwe”, and “Get Up, Stand Up”.
The Legend Live is a re-release of sorts, courtesy of Trojan Records-- one of the most important labels in Jamaican music history. It was originally released in 1980 on VHS with seven fewer tracks. As DVDs tend to feature ample extras, this one has a handful, including an overview by Chris Salewicz, and a small documentary on Marley and the show, including his prophecies and messages.
As a fan, I’m pretty damn grateful for this. I've never seen a Bob Marley show live. I never will. But this documentary does nothing but capture the raw power and magic he possessed, as one of the few world legends in history.
