Chances are you know “the” Underworld song. Yeah, you know the one I’m talking about: “Born Slippy”. Come on! You know which one I mean. Think about it. It’s the one that’s all like: “Drive boy, dog boy, dirty numb angel boy-- BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM, etc.” It was the song in Trainspotting during the scene where Obi-Wan overdoses and drops his pills in the dead baby’s ass and he has to go in and get them and when he gets inside the dead baby’s ass that dude from Hackers is in there and he’s all like, “I have a 28.8 modem, the fastest in the WORLD!” Yeah, yeah, yeah. THAT Underworld song.
Okay, well, that song, “Born Slippy” is just one of 16 songs that appear on their two-disc “best of” collection titled Underworld 1992-2002. And, well, it’s okay. I mean, if I were a tripped-out raver kid, I’d eat this up. And I like Underworld, don’t get me wrong. But to sit and listen to it for two full CDs proved to be a bit,.. much.
That said, I think it is appropriate that they have a compilation that pieces together the best work of their last ten years. It’s just that I can only handle it in smaller doses. One CD length would be tolerable. I guess I just have to listen to this in two sittings, with something else in between.
If you’re not familiar with Underworld, chances are you’re not reading this review, and you’re not going to buy a “best of” album from a band you’ve never heard of. So I’ll write this for people who are familiar with their work.
All of the hits-- from 1994’s dubnobasswithmyheadman to 2002’s A Hundred Days Off-- are here. My personal faves are the harmonica and blues heavy “Bigmouth” (an unreleased track from 1992), “Push Upstairs” (from 1999’s Beaucoup Fish), and the underwatery tune “8 Ball”, which was originally done for the soundtrack of ‘Nardo’s silver screen bomb, The Beach. Wait a minute,.. did I just say that I liked something from The Beach?!?
I’ve got to go take a shower. While I’m in there scraping my skin off with a loofah, hop on over to underworldanthology.com and check it out for yourself.
