Being broke is bullshit. Thankfully, Christmas came early, and I got The Revenge of the Robots DVD in the mail. What’s it all about? It’s all about Def Jux. What’s Def Jux? It’s fucking amazing, that’s what it is. Not because it’s the next big thing; because it’s a new, good thing. And good music is rare. Def Jux is an independent-as-fuck label, home to a collective of MCs, DJs, and producers taking their love and respect for hip-hop culture, and music in general, and breathing some new breath into it. Like Public Enemy did when they came out, or the Beatles when they released The White Album.
The Revenge of the Robots DVD follows the Def Jux crew-- El-P, Mr. Lif, Rjd2, and a slew of others-- as they travel across America and dip into Europe on their "Revenge of the Robots" tour. You get to see the ups, downs, and off-stage hilarity a la the hour-long documentary topping disc one of this two-disc set. After that comes a shorter documentary on the label itself, capturing El-P, Aesop Rock, and Vast Aire in their respective homes, talking about life and freestyling. Then there’s some live performances after the short film, which show the artists doing what I respect them immensely for. And as if all that weren’t enough, there’s a handful of music videos, too.
And that’s just disc one, my friends. Disc two is a CD, for the most part. Rjd2 cooks up a mean-ass mega-mix, showcasing his Def Jux family’s tracks. Then there are some live audio tracks for you to feast on. And if you have a computer, pop the audio disc in. You can play Mr. Lif’s now-infamous Devolution trivia game.
If you’ve never tasted Def Jux, this is the perfect way for you to get familiar with them. You get some insight as to why their music is the way it is, what inspires them, and why Def Jux is not just another investor-controlled label. If you’re hesitant, there’s a whole slew of albums you could pick up to sample. Email me or Debbie, and we’ll praise up some recommendations. You should at least give it all one single listen, because it’s a new chapter in music that is being written in our lifetimes.
