Mom and Dad,
Hope you guys are well. Things here are great! I was really relieved I didn’t have to go home for Thanksgiving. And believe you me, all week I’ve been sweating out the possibility that I might get sent home to spend Christmas with you guys, too. Thankfully, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld says there’s no chance in hell of that happening for any of us. What a relief! My job here is not even close to being done. I couldn’t handle an interruption like going home for the Holidays.
Mr. Rumsfeld came to me personally yesterday and asked me to keep an eye on everyone for him while he takes his annual lengthy Holiday vacation. I told him not to worry; that he could count on me, and to go have some good old R&R. That poor guy. He’s been working so hard this past year, figuring out how to bring freedom and peace to the Iraqi people. I mean, how many people have the foresight to send an entire army overseas to fight an enemy before they really even know who their enemy is? He must be psychic!
Before he left, though, he confided in me that I won’t be coming home in the foreseeable future. None of us will. The war is far from over, and there’s much more to be done; which is fine by me. I’m having the time of my life! I’ve met a lot of really great people,.. who unfortunately died yesterday in a small explosion. I started to cry a bit, because I thought it was pretty sad. But Mr. Rumsfeld told me not to waste one single tear on those boys. They were martyrs for their country, and that’s the most noble way any man could ever ask to die. Man, Mr. Rumsfeld is the BEST!
Well, I gotta go. We’re raiding a small village today because someone somewhere told one of my platoon leaders that Saddam might be hiding there. We gotta write living wills up before we leave.
Take care, and I love you. I’ll be home, well, hopefully never, because bringing freedom and justice is a nonstop job.
