If Diverse ever loses his wallet, you’ll know how to find it. Just look for the one with “Bad Motherfucker” branded into the leather. That’s his. He’s goddamn Shaft on the mic, kids. When the beat’s aggressive, he’s aggressive. When it’s laid back and introspective, he’s laid back and introspective. And lyrically, he and Aesop Rock could be similar-styled tag team champions. It’s fast, thick, and full. Nothing sounds forced or unnecessary. It all just works, damn near perfectly.
And if all that weren’t stroking enough, he adjusts his delivery to not only compliment his producers, but also the other MCs who make cameos on the record. We’re not talking nameless nobodies here. We’re talking Rjd2, Madlib, and Prefuse 73. We’re talking Vast Aire, Jean Grae, and Lyrics Born. People known for making some of the best shit on Earth. And despite this being his debut full-length record, Diverse just steps on up to the mic without intimidation, and holds his own.
One A.M.’s only real weakness is its length. Not that it’s ridiculously short, but by record's end, I’m hungry for another 15 tracks.
Diverse is worth a trip to the record store, kids. Let the first single be proof alone. It’s a track called “Explosive”. Rjd2 fills you with some Bomb Squad-style rock 'n' roll, Lyrics Born riddles your ass with a verbal semi-automatic, and Diverse fills in the blanks like the main event at a heavyweight boxing match. You want to drive faster, work harder, and then sit completely still to try and remember every single word they say.
