From The Labor Day EP press release:
“These tracks deal with the frustrations of media deception, the demons of anxiety and depression, and in ‘Punk Life’, through the structure and inspiration of Biggie Smalls’ ‘Juicy’, following your dreams and the heroes that play in them.”
Yeah, you read that right. “Biggie Smalls”. High-five on that one. I mean, how often do you read about a punk band pulling inspiration from one of the most popular MCs of the last 20 years? Exactly.
But give this EP a listen, and that becomes less and less strange. Sure, Hurry-Up Offense plays punk rock, but it’s well-crafted pop songwriting. Don’t think Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. Think Nirvana or Face to Face. It’s loud, fast, and really, really melodic, which is rare. The vocal harmonies are pretty fucking tight, and balance out some of the throatier, hollered lead vocals. All three songs sound like they came from the same band, but are just unique enough to stand alone from one another.
If you’ve been listening to punk for a long time, you’ll appreciate this for being what punk once was, but rarely is today-- something different. And if you don’t like punk, you might dig this for everything that is atypical about it.
