I'm always excited when CDs are delivered to the TLC mailbox. I was doubly excited to see that one had come from our good and personable friends at Maverick Recording Company. They had generously sent Wayne a copy of Tantric's new album for review. He passed the CD on to me, since he was too busy working on other parts of the paper to listen to any rock 'n' roll.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Who the hell is Tantric?" Well, I didn't know either, but I was eager to pop it into my player and find out. Luckily, I decided to read the literature that came with the album before I pressed "play". If I hadn't had such forethought, I would have unknowingly broken the law.
You see, I am not permitted to listen to, or even touch this disc because of Maverick's new and exciting security measures. A letter from their general manager, Daniel A. Savage, explains the horrors of "illegal file trading and piracy", and what they are doing to prevent it. Maverick is "...working very hard to deal with these problems." Mr. Savage politely notified Wayne (the addressee of this letter) that the CD they have sent him is watermarked so that they can track said disc-- and any extracted music that comes from it-- should it be illegally distributed.
Now, I wasn't quite sure what they meant by "unauthorized" usage of this valuable Tantric CD; luckily, a bolded section of the letter spells it all out for me, the layman:
"By accepting this CD, you also agree to not make any copies of the CD, to not play the CD in your computer, and to not upload the CD or any part of it to the Internet or otherwise allow or make the CD or any part of it available on the Internet. You agree that you will not lend this CD to anyone, and that you alone will listen to this CD for promotional purposes. Accordingly, you will not play this CD for anyone."
So it is made very clear to me that I, Fphatty, cannot, under any circumstances, listen to this CD.
In turn, I cannot tell you that you're much better off listening to Tantric when it came out the first time around as a band called "Stone Temple Pilots". I cannot let other people listen to any of the music because-- God forbid!--the band might get some exposure. The only thing I can do in good conscience is pack this golden CD up and mail it back to Maverick Recording Company where it is safe and sound.
Unfortunately, I can't afford the postage, because all of my money is going toward the construction of a soundproof booth. Once it's completed, Wayne will be able to review all of the music Maverick sends him without betraying their terms. Thank you, Maverick Recording Company, for saving me and countless others from "...two of the most daunting issues facing the music industry today."
