Thank God for Koch Records, because in the time between Royce’s first record and this new one, he’s been bounced around from record label to record label. Four total. And it don’t make sense.
Royce is seriously one of the best MCs out there. No awkward rhymes. No trying to cram eight million words into one breath. He has flow, and tells a story like the forefathers used to. Plus, he’s got the skills to battle with the best of 'em (Remember that whole D-12 and Eminem conflict?). His production matches perfectly, too, whether he’s rhymin’ over a Primo track, an Asar track, or something from Carlos “Six July” Broady (the man behind Biggie’s Life After Death). All together, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in regular radio-play rotation amidst mainstream and underground artists.
Royce uses Death Is Certain to observe and reflect upon the day-to-day-- the good, the bad, and the sad. In 15 tracks, he calls out the wack, pays tribute to the beauty and struggle of the black woman (“Black Girl”), and documents the tribulations life gives us (“Everybody Goes”).
Death Is Certain better blow up. Help out buy picking up a copy.
