Somewhere between Monster Magnet and The Breeders lies Jucifer's EP, War Bird. Jucifer is a band that takes the droning guitars of stoner rock and sets hypnotic female vocals on top. And the disc has a vibe all its own, with several of the intros reminding me of Tool.
Drop-tuned riffs spell out the sounds of troubles being exorcised. Jucifer’s War Bird is us putting our demons to bed at the end of a long day. As we reach the end, we get a cool down period with the pseudo-country tune "My Stars", followed by 46 minutes of crickets chirping and other nighttime country sounds to lull us off into a peaceful slumber.
Jucifer has crafted a journey, not just a mood piece. From heavy beginnings to peaceful ends, they have done more in an hour than most bands do in a lifetime.
