The band: Nikki Sixx (bassist and songwriter for rock 'n' roll behemoth Motley Crue) and Tracii Guns (lead guitarist and founding member of L.A. Guns) have been fixtures of the hard rock scene for over two decades. The two of them have teamed up with newcomer London Le Grand on vocals, and Scot Coogan, an accomplished session and touring drummer who has worked with everyone from boy band All-4-One to Pete Yorn.
The album cover design: I’m a picky bastard when it comes to cover design, and I was less than impressed with the caricatures of the band and the gun wielding bug-eyed mutant bride on the inside. I know it’s retarded, but that is what I use to gauge how badly I want to hear an album. Other than the illustrations, though, I have absolutely no other gripes.
The music: More shocking than getting kicked in the nuts with golf cleats. From the thunderous groove of the punk-metal-inspired "Shut The Fuck Up" to the heartfelt album closer "Only Get So Far", this album is great. The amazing Bonham-ish beats of Coogan, combined with the always solid driving bass lines of Sixx, make for one of the tightest rhythm sections I’ve heard in a long time. London Le Grand is by no means your standard everyday cookie-cutter vocalist, either. The dude's got a really strong voice, and can sing anything you throw at him. On this album, Tracii Guns could do no wrong. Everything about his guitar work completely blew me away.
The verdict: I loved the album. These guys are definitely worth checking out. I hope they come within a few hours of Milwaukee so I can check out their live show.
