Goddamnit! I really wanted to hate this. I like taking out my own personal frustrations and insecurities on innocent, unsuspecting bands who send me their shitty CDs. But this wasn’t nearly as bad as I was hoping.
Jersey are a couple of legitimate, working class Canucks who make music that sounds like a healthy mixture of every punk band I’ve listened to and liked in the last ten years. The speed, the brothers-at-arms background vocals, the decent musicianship. More in the vein of Rancid and a horn-less Less Than Jake than Swingin' Utters and Social Distortion.
Their U.S. debut, Generation Genocide, starts off like a motherfucker with “This Town”. Honestly, more than half of the record keeps up this motherfucker of a spirit. Tunes like “One Way Street”, “Violation”, and “Richmond Resurrection” feel like pleasantly catchy punches to the throat, and you can’t help but repeat them. The only times my skip button trigger-finger started itching were the occasional strays into gentler, more radio-friendly territory. They were few and far between, but they did interrupt my content moment of aggressive bliss.
Generation Genocide will be out April 27th. Give it a listen, because Jersey will probably be one of those bands that gets better and better as they grow.
