ILLOGIC - CELESTIAL CLOCKWORK

Celestial Clockwork is the kind of record I'll never sell, no matter how hungry I get. It's a piece of art. Musically, the ubiquitous Blueprint (Soul Position, Greenhouse Effect) paints ridiculously emotional landscapes for Illogic's words to walk through. And, trust me, once he starts rhyming over that music, you’ll need to play the record over and over again just to appreciate how hard it hits you.
Want specifics? Aside from amazing collabo tracks with Slug, Aesop Rock, Vast Aire, and Blueprint himself, there’s the introspective, stake-claiming "Birthright", which’ll have your head fighting gravity in laid-back motion, bobbing in time to the thick, bluesy organ and hi hat-draggin’ beat; "First Trimester" will have your jaw dropped hard once the last verse wraps up; and the album-closing "I Wish He Would Make Me" delves into Illogic’s own spiritual beliefs, over simultaneously dramatic and subtle piano and strings.
But, for real, I don’t have enough space to do it justice. Listening to Celestial Clockwork makes me feel like I did the first time I heard De La Soul’s Buhloone Mind State, or Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly. You never forget it, and it inspires you to try and make something equally as beautiful.
