Chapter 1: The \"It\'s Like That\" / \"Buckwilin\'\" Single
I wish I had some liner notes to know who did the production on these tracks. \"It\'s Like That\" is the perfect first single to introduce Curtains to the world. The minute he starts wordplayin\', you\'ll forget there\'s even a beat behind him. Which is a shame, because I\'m convinced \"It\'s Like That\" is the hardest working beat in show business right now. Not that it\'ll blow your mind or anything. It\'s a decent, strong beat, with some real addictive piano laced throughout. But not only does it have to contend with some serious MC skill stealing its spotlight, it also has to compete with the track that proceeds it, \"Buckwilin\'\". Curtains adapts his rhyme style accordingly over the nicest Bomb Squad homage I’ve ever heard.
Chapter 2: The Young Brooklyn Mixtapes
Save for the annoying fuckin\' yelling (Like Blueprint, I can’t stand yelling on a mixtape!), the mixtapes will keep your stereo busy. The production will catch you off-guard. Most of it sounds like standard hit-ready fare, but it’s not boring like the usual radio shit. There are real nice things going on-- creative, interesting little details, like the dark, intergalactic funk rock of Vol. 1’s \"Broke Man\'s Theme\", the dusty piano of the track \"Freestyle\" on Vol. 2, and the throwback beat of Vol. 3’s track \"Freestyle\" featuring Meeno.
As an MC, Curtains is a damn good storyteller. I mean, I didn’t grow up on the streets, and I sure as hell ain\'t an MC trying to get a label deal, but I can understand a good story when it\'s told well, which Curtains does. He\'s got a braggadocio and flow like Jay-Z and Guru, and can adapt to the music when his production changes.
Chapter 3: Why You Should Buy The Album
I’m glad this stuff fell into my lap. Curtains is a good MC. And he’s young. It’d be real interesting to watch him progress, work with different producers, and try different things rhyme-wise. And there are enough different little surprises to make me curious about the full-length record.
