Straight from the land down under comes Bumblebeez 81, with their premiere full-length, The Printz.
I was exposed to this sibling duo-- a brother and sister team made up of Chris and Pia Colonna-- when I placed a link to their video for \"Pony Ride\" in our A/V section. And, I admit, I wasn\'t immediately \"hooked\". But I knew I was intrigued enough to want to hear more.
The Printz is a collection of two EPs that were put out by the \'beez a few years ago: White Printz and Red Printz. But if I hadn\'t read that in the press release, I never would have known. They blend together perfectly, forming one great album. One great, fucked-up album, I might add.
Chris is the mastermind behind the beats, while Pia (whose MC name is \"Vila\") times and rhymes over the cut-and-paste tracks. Chris, an art school graduate, became heavily influenced by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the New York downtown graffiti scene. And those visual inspirations show through in his sound.
If Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Futura 2000 started a band, this is what it would sound like.
There is deep sampling, heavy bass kicks, and layers upon layers upon layers of noise going on here. You\'d need a machete to get through it all. Mix that with the lyrical delivery of Beck, and you\'ve got something I\'ve never heard before. Literally. And with plans for a new full-length in the making, it looks like they\'re ready to do it again.
Be sure to listen to the whole disc all the way through, but pay special attention to the funky \"Microphone Diseases\", the biting beat of \"Bambino\", and the sweet sounds of \"Vampires\". Those tracks in particular are the Bumblebeez\' knees. Dig.
