Damn! Now this is what I\'m talking about! The band is Brazil, the name of the disc is A Hostage And The Meaning Of Life, and it is beyond great. From the beginning of this baby, I was hooked. Brazil has put their own twist and energy on the Mars Volta neo-prog sound, mixing old prog masters Yes and Fates Warning into a killer new band.
The stellar vocals from Jonathon Newby remind me of Dave Clemmons from the underappreciated Nineties band Damn The Machine. Tackling the tough balance of playing technical, intricate parts while plunging deep into the emotional depths has paid off. Jumping from quiet intensity to pummeling power both musically and lyrically, Brazil pits technology and emotion against each other, and it works perfectly every time.
There isn\'t a single misstep on this disc, which is even more amazing when you realize it\'s their first full-length. The energy, passion, and soul that Brazil bares on this album make it hands-down one of the best albums of the year.
