Hmmm... this one took me a little longer than usual to figure out. During L.A. Tool And Die’s Fashion For The Evildoer, I let both sides of my brain banter at will, each one making their case for or against what I was hearing.
The friendly, open-minded side was trying to explain to my bitter, cynical side that these guys are kind of fun. They’re singing about unusual situations in a fun, perky way. It’s nice to listen to an album that sings about robots and prison life, as opposed to one that is full of love ballads and brokenhearted crap. Cynical Side would then remind Friendly Side that the singing is pretty obnoxious.
Friendly Side laughed at Cynical Side’s incorrigible, gruff exterior, and said, \"It does sound pretty well-produced.\" Then the third song began to play, and Cynical Side bitch-slapped Friendly Side into a friendly coma. The bubbly music quickly became monotonous, taking away any points L.A. Tool may have won for originality. The little sparks of creativity were snuffed out by the impression that they’re overly anxious to be crazy-wacky.
Fashion For The Evildoer walks a fine line between being refreshingly different and obnoxiously rebellious. In the end, Cynical Side stood triumphantly on Friendly Side’s lifeless body and declared the album to be worthy of eye-rolling-- and then it ate a sandwich.
