\"I attack from the back...\"
- from \"It\'s Hard To Walk Tall When You\'re Small\"
Morrissey, a gender unto himself (\"Morrisseyself\"), is back with his first album in seven years, You Are The Quarry. The record company is sending out only a four-song sampler for reviewers because of piracy and all that ballyhoo, I guess.
These sample songs make me think that... well, Morrissey\'s kinda pissed. These songs are a lot more aggressive than what I associate with him. (Of course, I\'ve only really heard The Smith\'s Best 1, so I\'m no true blue fan.) There are riffing guitars, powerful drum beats-- music much heavier in the loafers. Then Morrissey\'s uniquely... Morrissey voice kicks in. You either love it or you hate it. I don\'t mind it. Hmmm... that didn\'t make sense.
The first track, \"Irish Blood, English Heart\", finds Morrissey pissed off about English politics and The Royal Family. I don\'t know much about Limey politics, but I\'m sure they\'re as messed up and corrupt as here in the USA. That quote above, from the second track, is Morrissey talking tough about starting shit. The last two songs go downhill for me. \"Munich Air Disaster 1958\" is about, I\'m assuming, a Munich air disaster that happened in 1958. I know nothing about it. The song is depressing. But Morrissey does one better on the depression front with the last song, \"The Never-Played Symphonies\", where he sings about his own death. Good times.
So, I liked this more than I expected to, but that\'s not saying a whole lot. The first two songs are surprisingly good and angry and energetic. The last two made me want to get some booze and a bottle of pills. Yep, Morrissey\'s back. Stay away from tall buildings with open windows.
