The Stand-Ins\' Clean Slate is a hard-rocking, only occasionally-prodding collection of guitar-driven tunes. It sounds like it could’ve been released back in the mid-Nineties. If it had been, I might’ve picked it up at the local record store while spending my grocery-bagger\'s paycheck on albums by the likes of The Meat Puppets and Urge Overkill.
The whole album, even the CD packaging art, has a throwback feel to it. It’s not like I think they’re aping anyone\'s styles; there’s just something familiar about listening to this album for the first time. I’m guessing me and The Stand-Ins might have similar musical tastes.
The singing is pretty laid-back. The guitars are crunchy. The drums keep the beat. It’s pretty basic, but solid rock stuff. No songs really stand out for me, but The Stand-Ins\' Clean Slate is good driving or background music, which ain’t a bad thing. It’s worth a listen.
