You remember John Hughes? You don\'t? Well, fuck, man. Let me break it down for you. John Hughes is responsible for some of the most popular movies of the Eighties. Any of these ring a bell to you?
- Mr. Mom
- Vacation
- Sixteen Candles
- The Breakfast Club
- Weird Science
- Pretty In Pink
- Ferris Bueller\'s Day Off
- Planes, Trains & Automobiles
- The Great Outdoors
- Uncle Buck
- Christmas Vacation
- Home Alone
Yeah, that\'s a long list. I know. I\'m just trying to illustrate my point that this motherfucker is responsible for a lot of good movies.
Anyway, John Hughes\' son (also named John Hughes) is Slicker. Now, when I first got this CD, I almost passed it off to another staffer to review. But there is something so odd and likeable about We Have A Plan, Slicker\'s fourth full-length, that I had to hold onto it.
Heavy in production (which I typically am not a fan of), there is some beautiful layering on this disc. It is rich and soulful, and you\'d never guess that it was all put together by a 27-year-old rich whiteboy from the Chicago suburbs.
\"A Strong Donkey\" is smooth and sexy; a perfect tune to make love to your old lady by. \"Straight Mess\" has a disconnected funky jive thang going on. And \"Village Dub Plate\" mixes a little bit of Eighties-era sound in with some funky bass drops. Delectable.
Will John Hughes, Jr. do for music what his father did for movies? Well, that remains to be seen. But he\'s got a motherfucker of a start, and this disc is enough to make me seek out earlier work. If you dig stuff that isn\'t easily categorized, and you\'ve got a funky bone in your body, dig it, and dig it well.
