I’ve liked Stephen Lynch since the first time I saw him on Comedy Central a few years back. Between that, and the frequent appearances on the Opie and Anthony show, it was enough for me to pick up his first album Little Bit Special and later the follow up Superhero”. But it always seemed like there was a little something missing from the studio versions of songs like “Lullaby”, “D&D”, and “Priest”. Well, I’ve found what it was that was missing. While all the words, jokes, and melodies were always there on the recordings, it was that live feel that I was missing. That hint of danger that Stephen could go much farther out when doing the songs live. Lucky for all of us, Stephen has just released a concert DVD called Live at The El Rey, and it’s chock full of all the good shit that makes Lynch’s songs work so well. He plays damn near every song from his two CDs and even throws in some new songs and behind the scenes extra stuff. If you don’t get the chance to see Stephen on his tour with Mitch Hedberg this fall, or if you do get to see it but can’t get enough, get this puppy and watch Stephen deliver his songs the way they were meant to be experienced – Live.
