Detroit will no longer be known as Rock City. Why? Because with the likes of The White Stripes and Blanche coming out of that neck of the woods, Detroit is now known for producing bands whose sound is more of a marriage between country and rock. The Stripes are fucking great at it. And Blanche\'s newest release, If We Can\'t Trust The Doctors..., places them on the same tier as ol\' Jack and Meg.
Blanche is dually fronted by Dan and Tracee Miller who, also in the vein of the Stripes, are husband and wife. (Only difference is that they\'re still together.) The couple is joined by musicians Feeny, Lisa \"Jaybird\" Jannon, and Patch Boyle. Together, these five created a disc of a dozen interesting and beautiful works of art.
\"Superstition\" is Blanche at their finest. Dan and Tracee layer lyrically over each other perfectly in this steel-pedaled tune. \"Bluebird\" is a cute little back-and-forth between the two singers, with banjo squeezed in for a down-home feel. \"So Long Cruel World\" is pure slippery twang, sliding in and out of the ears of the listener. And the cover of \"Wayfaring Stranger\" is a wonderful new take on an age-old tune.
It was killing me trying to figure out who Dan Miller reminds me of, but I think I finally got it. At points, he has the delivery and nasally tone of the head Violent Femme, Gordon Gano; but during other tracks (\"Garbage Picker\"), his sound reminds me a lot of chief Butthole Surfer, Gibby Haynes. So somewhere between those two probably lies the truth. (I hate feeling the need to liken the sound of Blanche to any one person or band, because their sound is unique. However, I also know that most people out there-- I\'m not trying to point fingers or nothing, but I\'m looking at you!-- like to have things categorized and placed. You probably wouldn\'t buy the album if I said, \"Blanche makes good music! Buy it!\" Right?)
So if you dig the hybrid genre of rock and Southern-fried country, chances are you\'ll like Blanche. This quintet steps away from the norm and concentrates on delivering a back-porch-jam-session punch to the listener. It\'s a welcome breath of fresh air in the world of music, and I can\'t wait to see what they do next.
(As an interesting side note, Dan Miller will be playing Johnny Cash\'s guitarist Luther Perkins in the upcoming motion picture about The Man In Black, titled Walk The Line. If the quality of Walk The Line looks similar to the way they handled the movie Ray, go see it.)
