I remember a time about ten years ago when Snoop Doggy Dogg (as he was known at the time) was simply a backup rapper to the legendary Dr. Dre. The young Calvin Broadus (Snoop\'s real name) was just a tall, lanky, creepy-looking kid that you didn\'t want to fuck with. There was no clothing line, no lead roles in movies, and definitely no porno video collaborations with Larry Flynt\'s Hustler empire. But now, eleven years after his solo debut album Doggystyle, Snoop is a different man. He has surpassed the level of being a musician, and dipped into the realm of cultural icon.
And his newest album, R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, is proof positive.
Being joined by a plethora of superb guest stars, Snoop delivers a gangsta punch to the listener with this soon-to-be classic. Produced by Snoop and The Neptunes, R&G is more soulful and sexy than prior albums.
The first track, \"I Love To Give You Light\", is a gospel choir-tinged welcome from Snoop himself. \"Ups & Downs\" is pure gangsta disco, with heavy sampling from none other than The Bee Gees. And \"Fresh Pair Of Panties On\" is just, well... sensual and perverted comedic bliss. (\"Do you have a fresh pair of panties on? / I\'ve got to know / or you could show... me.\")
And as if that weren\'t enough, \"Signs\" features not only the legendary Charlie Wilson, but also Justin Timberlake! (He even says the F-word!) And the result is one of the most fun (and fucked-up) Snoop tracks to date.
And lastly, \"I\'m Threw Witchu\" is one of the funniest Snoop tracks ever. It\'s dedicated to \"...all the fellas out there,\" and encourages guys not to hit their bitch, but rather leave them. See? R&G not only entertains, but also attempts to educate us on pressing social issues.
Chances are if you\'re a Snoop fan, you\'re already gonna have your dog paws on R&G. But if you\'re one of those people who have always been intimidated by or downright scared of digging on a Snoop album, R&G is a good disc to start your collection with. It\'s got the expected Snoop essence, with an extra splash of funk and soul stirred in for good measure.
