London trio Dirty Vegas hit the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles like the mothership last week as they opened for the legendary Eighties band Tears For Fears. They hit the stage with a tremendously strong sound, and everything felt almost space-age.
Singer Steve Smith lead the band in an enthusiastic performance as he jumped around, singing songs that had the essence of a Beatles/U2 hybrid. An ambience of house rhythms, spacey trickster electronics, and mellow dance grooves turned the Universal Amphitheater into one giant house party.
The band’s most familiar song, \"Days Go By\" (that they lent to a Mitsubishi commercial a while back), was performed to explosive applause from the audience, along with their tribute to Pink Floyd\'s \"Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2\" receiving incredible appreciation for the band’s obvious influences.
Dirty Vegas\' setup for Tears For Fears proved that they aren’t just an opening band, but are an essential part of musical history that can hold their own and give a performance that anyone would be more than happy to pay $45 to see.
