My first real lesson in college has been about television. Antioch is the kind of place where TV is representative of mainstream culture, thus must be eliminated. The media is evil. We all know it. So there are a few members of our lovely community who have broken away from it to do their best to become fully-developed intellectuals who are in touch with the "real" world.
In my futile attempts to grow as a person, I too spent all my free time engrossed in riveting conversation and social change discussion groups. Eventually, I realized that intensive thought 24/7 was exhausting. Watching sitcoms and charting Oprah's weight fluctuation was relaxing.
TV is therapy for the overtaxed mind. What could possibly be better than watching Jerry Springer to put yourself at ease about that embarrassing moment at last night's party when you accidentally dropped trawl? Who else really cares about your dysfunctional relationship, if not Dr. Phil? And we can't forget Homer. He makes everything seem all right.
TV is a necessary item for my college survival. I've accepted this. We all need a break that will leave us clean for drug tests, and doesn't involve lube or love.
