Whenever a movement in music happens, there are always a few core bands that start things moving. They come up with the sound that defines the genre. After that initial definition, a plethora of other sound-alike bands start to seep out of the woodwork. Then the seeping becomes a trickle, the trickle a steady stream, then something breaks, and there is a flash flood of bands that all sound the same. It is the music business. It happens for every new thing, be it butt rock, grunge, nu-metal, boy bands, etc.
Sometimes bands are forced to compromise to get signed, changing their sound to fit in with whatever is popular at that moment. Their one big moment in the spotlight, and they sound just like someone else. It's their shot at the big time, but you can't remember their name because they sound just like NickelbackPuddleOfMuddCreedStaind. They come in towards the end of the movement. These groups are cannon fodder. The record companies are trying to mop up every last crumb from their plate before the cash cow disappears. The record companies are always just a step behind what's going on. They're trying to keep a moneymaking scene alive, but what they are really doing is smothering it-- killing the creativity and any chance of expanding the sound because they want a NickelbackPuddleOfMuddCreedStaind clone. It's a shame that record companies feel they have to do such things, because sometimes, creative musicians might come up with something new to say-- things no one else thought of that could be just as big.
I bring all of this up because the disc I'm listening to right now, the self-titled Kutless, feels like that to me. I can hear some creative things going on in this disc, but it sounds too much like all those bands that I can't tell apart. Kutless has talent. They are young, and I think they will have something to say if they are not suffocated by coming into whatever this movement in music is called. They are good musicians and capable songwriters, and I hope they make it out the other end of this thing before it all collapses, because the record companies will stop calling as soon as the next big thing comes along. That is sad for those bands that never had a chance to stand in the spotlight and be themselves.
