My father told me two very important things when I was a child. First, he said to never trust a woman who won't let you suck her toes. Second, he told me to always powder my balls. Needless to say, my dad is the most well-laid man I know. I have absolutely no idea what any of this has to do with Hybrid or their new album. I just thought I'd share.
Anyway, Morning Sci-Fi (Distinctive Breaks) glides gently along the lines of taste and opinion for me. On one side, I could shit-can it for being typical of its genre. On the other side, I'm not sure what its genre exactly is. For some reason, "techno" doesn't seem to cover it. I'm on my third listen for the day right now and, so far, the only things that jump out begging for me to criticize them are the male vocals that appear a few times on the whole album, and the moments where things dip into average techno cadence. And, as much as those two variables wear thin on me very quickly, they're both drowned out by the fact that the theme and flow of the album sinks into the murky waters of soundtrack.
Morning Sci-Fi is one of those albums that makes me see things happening to it; like it forces some imaginary film to play itself out-- shot for shot-- in my overactive imagination. And while the level of musical description reached here lacks the abstraction of Aphex Twin, or the grit and experience of DJ Shadow, it still holds merit. This album is blaring neon and rolling urban landscapes. But, at the same time, it's light, orchestral, and (I'd almost go as far as to say) ambient.
If you've ever taken the time to crack open some old Liam Howlett (Prodigy), DJ Cam, ยต-Ziq, Orbital, or other albums along those lines, then you'll probably get a kick out of Morning Sci-Fi. Seriously, I've listened to this thing three times in a row now, and though I'm definitely feeling the burn, I haven't swiped the CD through my ass-crack and passed it off to an enemy yet. That's gotta tell ya' something.
