Sweet baby Jesus, I've finally found the soundtrack to my movie, The Sad Girl Who Learned Kung Fu At The Funk Palace! The first part of the film, where we're introduced to The Sad Girl, will be scored by Audra Kubat's new album, Million Year Old Sand (Time's Beach Records). Kubat's raw acoustic guitar licks weave folktales in classical patterns, combining with her shadowy, poetic voice to create a quilt of the softest musical fabric. The minimalist sound is perfect to accompany the scenes of our protagonist going about life in her humble small-town surroundings.
Of course, through circumstances beyond her control, The Sad Girl finds herself in the middle of Feudal Brooklyn. Birth of a Prince (Wu-Tang Records), the latest from hip-hop genius The RZA, is the soundtrack for this segment. Heady beats flow freely as the baseline churns with the Shaolin hum of urban oceans. RZA's patented rhyming style delivers blow after blow, like a rapid-fire one-inch-punch from Hell. Here is where The Sad Girl discovers the harsh world outside her tiny villa, and trains to deal with it.
Finally, The Sad Girl's journey ends at The Funk Palace. The dance floor is packed, and everyone's shakin' what their mama gave 'em to Galactic's new LP, Ruckus (Sanctuary Records). The instrumentals cave you in and rocket you skyward, all at the same time. The vocals grind and moan their way into your bed, like Isaac Hayes in a Roman bathhouse. And the entire album runs thick and unyielding, layered like a lasagna, and lubed up with the oily electronic production of Dan The Automator. This will be the score to the final scene of my movie, in which The Sad Girl wins the Afro-Beatbox-Basket-Weaving Championship Tournament, and returns to her humble hometown a hero and tae kwon do master.
Okay,.. I realize the movie idea might need some work. Still, these albums are amazing, and would make decent soundtracks to anyone's daily grind.
