To those who have seen one of David Cronenberg’s films before, it will come as no surprise that the flesh obsesses him. Not flesh alone, but flesh and technology. Whether it’s the twin doctors who make gynecological tools for mutated women in Dead Ringers, or people humping the wounds inflicted by car accidents in Crash, Cronenberg is one sick bastard,.. and I love it!
eXistenZ is no different. This time it’s all about video games; video game systems made of living tissue that "port" right into your spine. Every gamer has a port installed. You can get them done at the mall, where you get your ears pierced.
The story follows the world’s greatest game designer, Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her assistant Ted Pikul (Jude Law) and weaves in and out of her newest game, eXistenZ. They're trying to outrun people intent on stealing or corrupting the only existing version of the pod. Like real life, the gamers are addicted to playing, and will do anything to play eXistenZ before the rest of the world can.
Worth the price of admission alone is a scene where Ted constructs a weapon out of the bones of what he has for lunch. Add to that one of the most erotic (non-naked) scenes I’ve ever seen onscreen of Ted lubing up Allegra’s starfish-like spine port with his tongue, and you’ve got yourselves a winner!
So, if you’re looking for a fucked-up flick, this is the place! Yes, it will gross you out. But there is so much more here for you to discover: great performances, creepy effects, and strange concepts that will burrow deep into your subconscious and have you squirming in your seats. eXistenZ is one of Cronenberg's tightest, most fully-realized films.
If you’re a Freak Film fan, and don’t already own this one, you should be ashamed of yourself. I recommend picking up the Canadian DVD. Sure, it’ll cost you more, but there’s some great extras on it that you can’t get anywhere else.
