Over the years, I've really grown fond of Kid Koala. I love his music more and more with each listen; the minimalism of it, the complete and utter lack of what most DJ music is expected to be, leaves me wanting more. So, you could imagine my excitement when old Vinnie Baggadonuts told me how he was releasing a trade paperback graphic novel with a new CD.
Nufonia Must Fall is the tragic tale of a newly-unemployed robot who falls in love with an over-stressed, over-worked woman. I honestly do not want to say any more than that, as I believe I've already given too much away.
The book's artwork was drawn by Koala, and the CD that serves as a soundtrack to the book is absolutely amazing. The book clocks in at nearly 340 pages, and the CD only at just under 17 minutes. Oddly enough, it took me about 17 minutes to get through the entire book. The idea is to listen to the album while you read the book. Well,.. there's no words, so I should say the idea is to listen to the CD while you look at the book.
The music is even more minimal than Koala's previous work-- which is hard to believe-- and concentrates primarily on instruments like piano, keyboard, and violin. Man, it's pretty. Kind of like Debbie's mouth.
I've always said that very few things that are created are perfect, but this is one of the exceptions to the rule. The fact that Koala writes, draws, and composes is amazing in and of itself. The fact that he does all of these things equally well is unheard of.
Seek out Nufonia Must Fall, then lend it to your friends and spread the word.
