Is it just me, or is there certain music out there that is seasonal? I’m not talking about Christmas tunes during Winter, or any shit like that. I’m talking about how bands like Portishead just sound better in the Fall than they do in any other season. It’s cold, dark, rainy music. And it is quite possibly my favorite type of music to listen to: Fall music.
So I was happy when I got Plastikman’s newest offering, Closer, to review. And, oddly enough, it is cold, dark, and rainy outside today. Word!
I love 1998’s Consumed, and I swear to Allah that I would drown a newborn baby for Artifakts. And Closer follows suit. If you haven’t heard any of Richie Hawtin's (Plastikman) earlier stuff, the best way to explain it is “minimal”. Insanely minimal. It’s electronica, no doubt, but what has saved Hawtin thus far through the decline of electronica mania is exactly that. It’s not shake your ass, suck on a fucking pacifier, shove a glow stick up your ass techno. It’s beautifully arranged and well thought out electronic, symphonic mastery.
This is “lay on your bed in the dark and wait to be stabbed by an intruder” music-- darker than Satan, more ambient than oxygen, and more dope than your mom. Well,.. maybe not that dope.
Is it vastly different than any of Hawtin’s previous work? Not all that much. But it fits in nicely with the rest of the work. I think I’d honestly dislike a Plastikman album that was vastly different than a previous one, because what I get out of a Plastikman album I really can’t get anywhere else. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken.
Electronica proper may be dead. But long live Plastikman.
