This book should be required reading in every high school and college across the country. Why? Because it would educate otherwise ignorant peoples to things they would never be exposed to. That’s the biggest reason that the vast majority of people actually enjoy (and only enjoy) things like MTV, Must-See TV, and commercial radio stations. They just don’t know any better.
Making Good Time: 65 Days on the Road with the Can Kickers is not only a tour diary for “folk as fuck” Connecticut band the Can Kickers, but also a document of the what could be-- progressive, self-published literature; youth-run venues; countless bands doing something other than the same ol’, same ol’. Even the book’s author, drummer/washboard player Doug Schaefer, who was aware of these things, seems innocently amazed at just how strong and passionate the people in these independent communities are.
The book also shows just how much work the Can Kickers themselves put into making things happen: booking their own shows; sleeping wherever they can (on stage after shows, in fans’ houses, outdoors); playing gigs while working near-full-time jobs. And they do it all for barely enough cash to survive on the road. Something’s wrong with that.
While it may not revolutionize the way people write books, it will introduce your brain to a world of things you might otherwise have never known about. Buy a book for yourself, or for someone who needs it.
