If you’re looking for a feel-good, life-affirming drama, look no further than Mike Newell’s latest film, Mona Lisa Smile. Set in the post-war 1900s, Mona Lisa Smile stars Julia Roberts (Sea Biscuit, Black Beauty) as Katherine, a rather liberal art history professor hired on at an all-girls' school. A highly conservative all-girls' school, mind you. And to make challenges worse, her students are some of the most intelligent people in the country. And they’re all girls.
Roberts does some stuff, art is involved, and her students’ lives are forever changed. Specifically, Giselle (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Betty (Kirsten Dunst), and Joan (Julia Stiles). DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN, WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE SUCH A REWARD?!? Are you trying to kill me? Oh, sweet angel of self-love, grant me the stamina to survive repeated viewings of this film! Help me to look past the fact that, occasionally, that damn talking horse from Pretty Woman will pop up on screen, totally killing the mood. Goddamnit, Julia! Can’t you see that Maggie, Kirsten, Julia, and I are trying to have a fucking moment alone? How rude! They should have shot you in The Horse Whisperer! You don’t see me pouring water all over your salt lick while you’re enjoying that, do you? DO YOU?!? Fucking animals!
