So I pick up this CD's press release and start reading through it. The person that wrote it is using the typical two-cent words, describing the music as "ethereal", "hypnotic", and blah blah blah. Needless to say, I dreaded putting this self-titled album by Peoria, Illinois-based Brief Candles into my CD player,.. but it shocked the shit out of me. This album is really, really good.
Singer Jen Boniger could be singing names out of a phonebook and make them sound hauntingly sexy. I would also like to mention that Kevin Dixon, who has since replaced Ryan Sullivan on guitar duties, does some amazing drum stuff on this album.
As a whole, the music is well-written and has a subtle complexity that combines intricate, atmospheric sound textures, and great musicianship to create a project reminiscent of The Cure's 1989 masterpiece, Disintegration.
