From Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, the guys that brought you Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, comes the story of Royal Tenenbaum, a father of three young geniuses who, now all grown up, are trying to move on after their parents' divorce. Ben Stiller plays Chas Tenenbaum. He lost his wife in a plane crash, and now he and his two sons wear red Adidas jumpsuits to help identify themselves in case of an emergency. It's little gems like this that set this film apart. The story is told in a novel fashion. There are chapters to each section, and the movie begins with the opening of a book entitled The Royal Tenenbaums. It's reminiscent of Rushmore's opening curtain segments. The Royal Tenenbaums has an old photograph look to it, that helps set the tone of the movie. The feel and style of this film are nothing short of genius. Director Wes Anderson has a real shot at some Oscar nominations this year. Gene Hackman has already scored himself a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Royal Tenenbaum. With five years of filmmaking and three films under their belt, it's refreshing to see Wilson and Anderson make it big with a low-budget film, and still not be jaded by Hollywood. I honestly can't wait to see their next one.
