A few of you probably remember Dark Shadows, a pioneer in soap operas for its serial treatment of vampirism among other themes. You've probably also seen at least a few foreign vampire flicks like the previously critiqued Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. However, there's a pretty good chance you haven't seen a foreign vampire flick with a soap opera feel, something that apparently could only be done in the Philippines. "The Philippines?" you ask. “Hell yes,” I reply. From the makers of Mad Doctor of Blood Island comes the melodramatic Curse of the Vampires, featuring an ensemble cast of Filipino actors you've undoubtedly never even seen anywhere else, not even the original Love Boat TV series. It primarily revolves around a family who, upon the impending death of the head of the family, learns their mother was a filthy stinking vampire who must be kept in line with a proper flogging. This film is unique in its treatment of vampirism-- vampirism doesn't seem to make one immortal or superhuman, just an amazing asshole. If you don't see another Filipino soap opera vampire flick this year, check out Curse of the Vampires. You won't be sorry you did.
