So this guy named Joel Peterson, who plays/played bass for the band The Faint, formed a little solo project called Broken Spindles. It began in late 2001 as a soundtrack for a friend\'s video project. But, soon enough, it became its own thing, and led to a debut recording in September of 2002 on Tiger Style Records. Now, two years later, Peterson releases his sophomore album, fulfilled/complete (Saddle Creek Records), under the moniker Broken Spindles.
I\'m not going to lie to you. I have no idea who Joel Peterson is, nor have I ever heard a song by The Faint. But I can tell you that I like this album quite a bit. An old high school friend of mine named Tiffany Kowalski has played in/with a few bands that are on Saddle Creek, like Mayday and Bright Eyes. And even though I was into what Tiffany was doing, I didn\'t really follow Saddle Creek all that much. We used to have a staff member that was really into Saddle Creek, so she would always review their releases. But that staffer is no longer with us, so I\'ve started to give the discs a listen myself. And I\'m glad I came across Broken Spindles. I\'m not fully aware of what Saddle Creek puts out, but Broken Spindles is slightly different than what I remember the label representing.
To put it bluntly, it\'s fucking crazy. There are some deep, dark bass lines, some piano work, and a great string section. Does it have a genre? No. Can I compare it to something else? No. But that\'s what\'s so goddamn good about it. It goes from the whispered, fast evilness of \"Events & Affairs\" to the creepy instrumental goodness of \"Harm\" (Which does have a NIN-ish charm about it... okay, so I did make a reference. Fuck off.), to the retro \'80s-esque hushed poppiness of \"The Dream\". And it does it all within a span of nine minutes. Not bad, if you asked me.
It\'s music like this that I love: shit you can\'t really explain to someone. So why have I been trying to explain it to you if it\'s so futile? I don\'t know.
How about this: You know Smash Mouth and Pink? Yeah? Well, it sounds nothing like any of those douche bags. So buy it.
