When I see dudes scowling on their album covers or in pictures, I prejudge and expect the same tired \"gangsta\" beats and rhymes about being hard, completely void of creativity. I know when I’m wrong, though, and this is one of those times.
Saigon gets big props for having a sense of humor, and being a little more inventive than most of the other \"hard\" rappers rhyming today. I mean, seriously, he kicks Warning Shots off with \"Favorite Thingz\" (co-produced with Cochise), parodying that song from The Sound Of Music. (To maintain my dignity, I had to look that up.)
But don’t think he’s some corny cat with a mic. I wouldn’t fuck with Saigon. He seems like the kind of guy who means business. Just listen to the Alchemist-blessed \"Stocking Cap\". Hell-- just get your hands on a promo copy, and listen to the voice-over on it. That shit caught me so off-guard, I fell off my seat, I was laughing so hard.
Tracks like \"Papi\", \"NY Streetz\", \"Yes\", and \"Whoo Kid Freestyle\" will keep your head in constant motion. And if the words on those tracks don’t grab you, just check \"Kiss The Babies\". That should be this year’s election theme song.
Warning Shots was a hell of a surprise to me. It’s got the straight-forward hip-hop spirit that the radio hitmakers lack, and the underground progressives use as a starting point. Honestly, I’ll probably pick up The Greatest Story Never Told when it drops next year.
