I\'ll tell you what you need; you need to recognize. Recognize what? The power of music. Corny as that might sound, ain\'t nothin\' more true. Politicians may have the power to pass laws, but they don’t have the power to make the people listen. Chuck D does. Zach de la Rocha does. Hell, Bad Religion\'s made a lifetime out of it. Travel back in time, and you’ll see a whole slew of names whose music did more than shake an ass or two. Names like Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown... and there’s more.
So, I thought I’d give you a Shit You Need full of modern musical forces to be reckoned with-- artists making shit to inform, educate, and induce some good old righteous change. Dig:
1. DJ Dangermouse and Murs: \"To A Black Boy\"
Sampling’s current bad boy, DJ Dangermouse (Grey Album) and Def Jux’s legendary word murderer, Murs, joined forces to record \"To A Black Boy\". Packaged as part of an EP showcasing the sample-worthy sounds of Sixties psychedelic rockers, The Free Design, Dangermouse and Murs take on the role of truthful newscaster, and bring to light the case of wrongly imprisoned Marcus Dixon. False accusations led to a trial, but the evidence proved his innocence. Then the judge decided to ignore the verdict, and enact an outdated law created years ago, when lynching was a Deep South pastime. That landed the 18-year-old, once-college-bound high school senior smack dab in the middle of a ten-year sentence for something the court proved he didn’t do. Go here, download the free MP3, and pass it to all your friends. Read more on the case, and make Dangermouse, Murs, and yourself heard.
2. Rock Against Bush, Volume 1
Fat Wreck Chords\' heavy honcho, Fat Mike, has taken his political activism one step further by assembling and releasing this massive compilation, the first in what is apparently an ever-growing series. Much like the tour of the same name-- which featured NOFX, comedian David Cross, and others-- Rock Against Bush, Volume 1 takes a slew of punk and hardcore bands-- both independent-as-fuck and major-label-as-hell-- and lines \'em up for a lil\' rock \'n\' roll soapbox forum. Everyone\'s on this thing: Against Me!, NOFX, Jello Biafra, Ministry, Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory... and IT’S ONLY SIX BUCKS!!! Considering November’s more than a half-year away, we’re gonna have a lot of anti-Bush rocking to do. Start your collection now. Go here and buy one.
3. The Plea For Peace Tour
Between running things at Asian Man Records and recording his own music, peacemonger Mike Park assembles Plea For Peace compilations and tours. The current go-round (pleaforpeace.com) features a diverse lineup, including Saul Williams, Cursive, Park himself, and a handful of others. Each show will be played at a non-Clear Channel venue, in order to support media diversity, and voter registration will be available at each show.
