This month’s Panels was especially hard to write, considering how much I hate comics right now. Office politics and bitter feuds are something the fans should never be forced to face. Let me explain.
After their soon-to-be 24th issues, Wildstorm titles WildC.A.T.S. and StormWatch: Team Achilles will be cancelled.
A few years ago, DC Comics purchased Wildstorm Comics. Many feel that this was essentially a ploy to bring Jim Lee (Wildstorm founder) under the DC fold. Apparently it worked, because Jim has already come out of a long hiatus from drawing comics to draw 13 issues of Batman, and his first issues of Superman are coming out soon. From the looks of things, DC realized that it no longer needed to waste time publishing Wildstorm books. Besides, they aren’t the run-of-the-mill, tired superhero stories that DC wants to be known for, anyway. DC didn’t feel the need to advertise the books outside of the actual Wildstorm titles, so no new readers caught on. So two of the most interesting books in the industry today got the axe.
Read this, and this, and this.
Sorry about that, but I feel that it’s required reading if you’re really going to get the feel for what kind of shit these creators are being put through. Next, I advise you to go out and pick up what you can of these titles while they’re still around.
Oh, and Rob Liefeld is coming back... to Marvel. So apparently, in the industry, it’s appropriate to get rid of mold-breaking titles that actually have something to say with both their story and art (such as, say, X-Statix). And it’s equally as appropriate to start another run-of-the-mill X title (a la X-Force) and bring back a decorated loser in the artistic merit field. (If you check out the promo images, apparently Cable’s t-shirt is so tight that you can see his abs through it.) Excuse me, I’m going to go hang myself now.
