So what’s orange, has seven testicles, and juggles? How the fuck should I know? I\'m a CD reviewer/writer, not a doctor. Therefore, here is the lowdown on Snow Patrol and their latest gift to the musical world, Final Straw.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the sound of Snow Patrol, just imagine Coldplay... if they didn\'t suck. They weave songs that have a vastness and otherworldly quality, and, at times, they sound like a stripped-down Garbage. Vocally, singer Gary Lightbody is no Shirley Manson, but he does have a simplistic quality to the tone in his voice that mirrors John Mayer, and even my personal hero, Thurston Moore.
A track that is definitive of Snow Patrol’s overall sound is \"How To Be Dead\", which shows their talent for slight studio trickery with tape effects and unique guitar tonality. Lyrically, \"How To Be Dead\" highlights Lightbody’s gift at creating somber, lovelorn tales that aren\'t cliché. Another key track is \"Ways & Means\", which emphasizes their ability to harmonize.
The only problems I have with Final Straw is, at times, the songs tend to blend together and are a little overproduced. But on the other hand, Snow Patrol’s creative lyrics and ability to paint sonic landscapes outweighs all.
