Chicago\'s The Bon Mots are old school (to a 27-year-old) alternative pop/rock. Their debut album, Le Main Drag, is a good listen in 2004. But what if my time machine was actually working for once (never buy a used time machine), and I went back 20 years ago to have the native peoples of that far-off era listen to the album? I postulate they would think this was a \"contemporary\" band. A good one, but of their ancient times, nonetheless.
The Bon Mots have not one, but two lead singers who alternate vocals between the odd and even tracks. The \"odd\" guy, Mike Coy, has a pretty good, emotive voice. But mister \"even\", Eric Chial, sings like the Morrissey of Chicago. (I don\'t mind, but some people are allergic to Morrissey.) Yeah, them vocals add to the Eighties alternative pop/rock feel. I didn\'t appreciate that sound then (I was a chubby kid that loved Bon Jovi), but I have of late.
However, imagine if you had someone from 1945 listen to Help! by The Beatles. They\'d have never heard anything like it, and would be all shocked and staccato and \"Say there, fella, what\'s the big idea?\" So, while I do enjoy Le Main Drag, I\'ve been hearing so many bands like The Bon Mots lately that even the slightest Eighties-ish sound, while well and good in theory, is getting old. Again.
