This is some \"more mysterious than Carmen Sandiego\'s whereabouts\" shit. How have I missed everything this dude\'s done? He\'s recorded with The Alchemist. He\'s collaborated with Curtains. He\'s lyrical fire. And based on White Bread, he’s conceptually more brilliant than 99% of the shitheads out there.
How did I miss this?!? I mean, for real, something this hot, how did I miss it? I’m still listening to it, and can’t figure out how he\'s not gracing the cover of XXL or URB or whatever\'s a credible hip-hop mag these days.
Check it: White Bread’s first song is a freestyle-- a vicious fucking freestyle-- over House of Pain\'s \"Jump Around\". All the freestyles on here are over songs that, well, frankly, could use something a little more lyrically respectable: The Beastie Boys\' \"No Sleep \'Til Brooklyn\" (which he re-titles \"Don’t Sleep\") and \"Paul Revere\", and 3rd Bass\' \"Pop Goes The Weasel\". It\'s like he\'s making up for the severe lack of lyrical muscle that these like-skinned MCs spit so many years ago (MC Serch excluded).
Throughout White Bread, Poverty eliminates that \"white boys can’t rap\" stereotype. (Do people still believe in that racist foolishness?) He kills it over tracks you\'ll recognize from other hitmakers (50 Cent? Run-DMC? Wrecks-N-Effect?), and seriously wins me over as one of the nicest MCs I\'ve never heard before.
Hunt this down. Listen to it with friends for the sheer nostalgia of identifying which tracks he\'s rhyming over. Then listen to it alone and \"ooh\" and \"ahh\" over how badass the wordplay is. Make sure you buy it, too, so he can change his name from \"Poverty\" to \"Filthy Fucking Rich\".
