The band that influenced grunge poster boys Nirvana and stoner rockers like Monster Magnet show why they’ve been inspiring other bands for the last 20 years with their latest release. Pigs Of The Roman Empire is the band\'s 200,000th release, and, as always, a great experimental jam from the fine folks at Ipecac.
For this disc, The Melvins have teamed up with Lustmord, the sound lord behind Throbbing Gristle and noise pioneers Surgical Penis Klinic. The result is a heavy, sludge-soaked album with shuddering waves of guitar feedback splashing into each other, the molecules combining and creating all new monstrous life forms that burrow deep into your psyche.
This disc is like the second half of a Tool album (you know, when everything starts getting really fucking out there) combined with Coil. The title track alone (which clocks in at 22 minutes) would make a damn cool soundtrack for a David Lynch movie, or for your own strange life.
Never a band to sit back and do the same thing, The Melvins prove that 20 years is just the beginning.
