You know, I remember a small publication during my days in Columbus, Ohio that tried to give people something different to read. They published this newsprint zine type of thing, and they would drop it in bars and restaurants around Columbus, praying, hoping that someone would pick it up and give it a quick read. They had great faith in their product, and they knew that someday it would take off.
I bet you think I\'m talking about tastes like chicken, huh?
WRONG! I\'M TALKING ABOUT THIS PIECE OF SHIT RAG CALLED MONKEY WRENCH THAT CAME OUT AROUND THE SAME TIME AS US! IT FUCKING SUCKED, PEOPLE SAW THROUGH IT, AND THEY CRASHED AND BURNED AFTER A HANDFUL OF SHITTY ISSUES! HAHAHA! EAT THAT, MONKEY WRENCH!
Anyway, Parse Magazine is also a tiny zine out of Columbus, Ohio. Unlike Monkey Wrench, however, it doesn\'t suck.
Parse Magazine is the artistic product of artists Patrick Kouse and Grant Gilliland. And it\'s damn fine, especially for a first issue.
Primarily, Parse can be considered an art sketchbook. There are no articles or stories, just art. Gilliland does one page, Kouse does the next. And so on.
Now, I\'m familiar with Gilliland\'s work, because he has done a few illustrations for us, but I had never seen Kouse\'s work before. But their art goes extremely well together; there is an artistic tug of war going on in each two-page spread, each page trying to win your eye. And at 22 pages long, there\'s enough eye candy here for a second viewing.
So, if you\'re into good art and zines, or just good art, or just good zines-- whatever-- drop these two talented bastards a line at the info below and beg \'em for a copy. And tell \'em Wayne sent ya.
I\'ve always wanted to say that.
Email Grant here, or email Patrick here.
