If you like Jurassic 5, and had the pleasure of bearing witness to Ozomatli in their self-titled album lineup days, you can’t not like Chali 2na. He’s the big, booming baritone voice passing out metaphors like Halloween candy. He can fill the mic with playfulness, or \"don’t fuck with us\"-ness. And he adds an equal sixth of incomparable charisma to the J5 live show.
But his presence is felt tenfold when he shows up on someone else’s song. Fish Market is the mixtape that proves it.
Piloted by Slum Village’s resident DJ, DJ Dez, 2na gets a 17-track showcase collecting a handful of his cameo appearances on other people’s cuts. Among them: the soulful Cali multi-crew cut \"Work It Out\" featuring Supernatural, Akil, Rakka, and Marc7; the conquering \"Sweet Science\" featuring Rasco; the Jamaica-tinged \"Revolution 9\" with Roots Manuva; and the Jamaica-thick \"Come On\" with Tippa Irie. Plus, there’s the one Linkin Park song (\"4 GT 10\"), which might be the only Linkin Park song I can really listen to.
And, like any good mixtape, this is the foreplay for the full-length get-down, Fish Outta Water, hopefully coming sooner than later.
If you’ve never heard Jurassic 5, or missed Ozomatli’s self-titled debut, this is an additional way to get introduced to one of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop. DJ Dez does a good job of blending it all together, keeping the show rolling until Fish Outta Water hits store shelves.
