\"The word \'arcana\' is derived from the Latin word \'arcanum\', meaning mysterious and magical. We came up with it to represent the magic that is found within our studio.\"
–Sean O\'Reilly, Arcana Studio
Today I want to talk to you about Arcana Studio-- a relatively new independent label. They’re a young group of very talented people who have already begun to claim their territory within the industry. In the past few months, they have consistently had books selling in the top 300, an accomplishment for a studio so new and relatively small. Their current lineup consists of:
KADE: An enigmatic warrior who doesn\'t feel... but always hurts. Kade is the light that dispels the darkness, and he must face the demon Apollyon to relinquish his hold on the realm.
ANT: The story of an eight-year-old girl named Hanna. Hanna is continually bullied and tormented at school, and to get away from it all she writes in her journal. But when she writes, she empowers herself as the super-heroine known as Ant!
EZRA: A medieval mercenary who is always for hire for the right price. Having to face the goddess Nephilia is going to be the biggest challenge she has ever faced.
100 GIRLS: Sylvia is one of 100 girls genetically bred to become the next generation of soldiers. She was kidnapped, and the changes that most teens must go through are compounded with the fact that she\'s developing unusual powers and is being hunted by the corporation that created her.
KHAN: The story of a young boy named Temujin who becomes one of the most feared generals and fighters in the history of the world.
STARKWEATHER: David Starkweather is a line cook who just can\'t get anything going right in his life. He recently found out that he is a witch, and that he has magic and power he barely understands.
The above short blurbs came straight from the mouth of Sean O’Reilly, head honcho at Arcana. Speaking with him gives you a real sense of the priorities and values of the studio.
\"Arcana\'s plan from the beginning is to establish ourselves as a studio, not a publishing house,\" states O’Reilly. \"All of our staff are incredibly talented and creative people, and comic books have been a very successful outlet for us to create our worlds and tell our stories.
Specifically, we haven\'t focused on any particular genre... but all of them have a level of fantasy in them. We believe that with the medium of books, one\'s imagination is the limit.\"
I can definitely see these guys doing great things as their careers progress, and they’ve already got some of the coolest talent in the industry lending their names and abilities to the cause: J. Scott Campbell, Greg Horn, Humberto Ramos, and Scott Lobdell, among others.
When I asked O’Reilly about relationships with other comic companies, he intimated to me that Arcana has a \"...massive crossover coming up, with arguably one of the top ten superheros in the entire industry. He\'s even had a movie after him.\" And amazingly these guys have already started branching off into other media. \"We\'ve also been working with other leading developers in video games and movies, and are really excited where this is starting to take us.\"
All of their books should currently be on the shelves at a comic shop near you. You can reach out to the folks at Arcana through their website at arcanastudio.com. And don’t forget to look for the Ant trade paperback out in November (cover by J. Scott Campbell), the Kade trade coming in February (cover by Humberto Ramos), and the second story arcs of each of those series will be hitting stores soon.
