Toys are expensive. However, when you really want to make a statement, there\'s nothing like a good, old-fashioned maquette. You know, one of those really cool, really delicate, really pricey little statues of one of your favorite animated characters. And since I can never spend enough money on Star Wars, this month’s featured item comes from a great line of maquettes based on the Clone Wars cartoon shorts from Cartoon Network.
Specifically, Gentle Giant Studios\' fetching maquette of everyone’s favorite Jedi Knight, General Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Standing proud at eight inches tall, Obi-Wan is sheer poetry. Gentle Giant did a terrific job capturing the simplistic, two-dimensional character from the cartoon. General Kenobi is fully decked out in his Jedi Clone Trooper armor. With his lightsaber in hand, he is ready to lead his troops into battle.
The paint is simple, but very cleanly applied. The predominant color of Obi-Wan’s outfit is white. Believe it or not, white is a very tricky color to apply to large surfaces. I’ve seen many terrific sculpts completely destroyed because of sloppy, inconsistent white applications. However, this was no problem for Gentle Giant. Kenobi’s armor is a very crisp, brilliant white. The General is finished off with a clear blue lightsaber blade and a simple black rock base.
One of the most critical aspects of any bust or maquette is a good design and pose. This is where Obi-Wan really shines. Kenobi is a man of action when the chips are down, and his pose does a terrific job portraying the Jedi Knight. The piece captures the Jedi in a tense situation. His arms are thrown back forcefully while grasping his powerful weapon. You can just feel the power intensifying into a dramatic strike. Mark McGwire is a candy-ass compared to the Sultan of Sith. His flowing cape further emphasizes the dramatic pose. All the while, Obi stares down his foe malignantly with the intensity of a herd of old ladies fighting over a $5 pot in a crowded church bingo hall. Yes, primal savagery at its most terrifying!
Gentle Giant Studios’ maquette of Obi-Wan Kenobi is a great way to blow some of your hard-earned cash. I mean, what were you going to do with it anyway? So that kid you sponsor over in Africa will have to make do with only one shoe this year. Big deal. Times are tough, kid.
This is a specialty store item, but you can still purchase one here or here.
